Q1 – Can you introduce yourself?
“My name is Louise and I help with social media and online engagement.”
Q2 – How did you get involved with the ship?
“I started in November 2018 and was looking to gain more experience in museums and historic sites. I was particularly interested in places which related to the history of the World Wars and Unicorn has some amazing stories from both conflicts.”
Q3 – How do you help on the ship?
“I write lots of the social media and blog posts which are based around the ship’s historic collection. This helps to highlight pieces that aren’t always on display to visitors. I also help to promote the various events that take place on the ship.”
Q4 – What do you like most about being part of the HMS Unicorn team?
“Everyone is really friendly and helpful, which was a massive relief when I first started because I wasn’t fully confident. It is lovely being around such a supportive team.”
Q5 – What is your favourite part of the ship?
“The period of history I am most interested in is the Second World War and so my favourite part of the ship is its collection from this era. This includes objects such as WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) uniforms and the dirks (daggers) of German U-boat officers.”
Q6 – What skills have you developed on the ship?
“I have managed to develop my writing skills, improving my ability to write clearly and concisely. I’ve also given my first ever tours, which although were nerve-wracking, really helped to improve my confidence.”
Q7 – What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved with volunteering at HMS Unicorn?
“I would say go for it! I was nervous at first but the team made it really easy and welcoming. It’s great to work alongside other people to help preserve an important part of Dundee’s history.”
