Meet the Team – Nicola

Q1 – Can you introduce yourself?

“Hi, my name is Nicola and I help with learning activities on HMS Unicorn.”

Q2 – How did you get involved with the ship?

“My sister started volunteering on HMS Unicorn a few years ago and she really enjoyed it and so encouraged me to get involved as well. It was a perfect fit as I was interested in gaining more experience with learning and education in a museum environment.”

Q3 – How do you help on the ship?

“When it comes to learning, I help out with everything from school trips and interactive tours to craft workshops and family fun days. I just finished a filming project with volunteers on the ship which will be coming out this month on our YouTube channel.”

Q5 – What is your favourite part of the ship?

“I like the parts that peak kids’ interests the most such as “the heads” or toilets. They also tend to love the guns and getting to see how sailors would have fired them.”

Q6 – What skills have you developed on the ship?

“I have certainly gained confidence, particularly when interacting with large school groups. We also have to coordinate well as a team and so my team working skills have improved as well.”

Q7 – What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved with volunteering at HMS Unicorn?

“I would say that if you are thinking about it then you should definitely give it a try. The team is super-welcoming and there are so many ways you can get involved.”

Q8 – Sum up HMS Unicorn in 3 words

“Welcoming, engaging, dynamic.”
