Meet the Team – Justin

Q1 – Can you introduce yourself?

“I’m Justin and I build and restore the ship models on HMS Unicorn.”

Q2 – How did you get involved with the ship?

“I got involved back in 1996 through the Department for Work and Pensions to help research an exhibition commemorating the Battle of Camperdown (1797) … and I have been helping ever since.”

Q3 – How do you help on the ship?

“My main responsibility is to look after the historic collection of models on HMS Unicorn and to construct new models which highlight different aspects of the ship itself. However, I like to muck in with anything and everything. You could say I am a “model” volunteer!”

Q4 – What do you like most about being part of the HMS Unicorn team?

“It is such a fun atmosphere and I get to work alongside lots of different people. It is nice to feel valued as part of the team.”

Q5 – What is your favourite part of the ship?

“I really like the gun deck because I am fascinated by naval artillery and it is like stepping back in time.”

Q6 – What skills have you developed on the ship?

“I’m constantly improving my model building skills and have just completed an updated version of my “Evolution of the Naval Gun” model. I’ve also started giving some model tours of the ship, sharing their stories and developing my public speaking. Writing historical blog posts for the ship has also improve my writing and communication skills.”

Q7 – What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved with volunteering at HMS Unicorn?

“We always love having fresh faces join the team and bring new ideas, talents and enthusiasm. It is also a really friendly and welcoming team, and the social side is great.”

Q8 – Sum up HMS Unicorn in 3 words

“Fascinating, engaging, unique.”
