Meet the Team – Juan Manuel

Q1 – Can you introduce yourself?

“My name is Juan Manuel and I am from the south-eastern part of Spain.”

Q2 – How did you get involved with the ship?

“I came to Scotland in February 2019 to work for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. I discovered HMS Unicorn when I moved to Dundee and, because I have a master’s degree in underwater archaeology, I was very interested in getting involved with such a historic maritime site.”

Q3 – How do you help on the ship?

“My main role is to undertake research of the historic collection, particularly the guns and armaments. I also like to help with the maintenance work of the ship and assist with the preservation and restoration on board.”

Q4 – What do you like most about being part of the HMS Unicorn team?

“I most enjoy having the opportunity to work with a piece of Scottish living history. It is such an incredible thing to be a part of.”

Q5 – What is your favourite part of the ship?

“For me it must be the guns and cannons, but I am also fascinated by the lower decks. There is something truly special about getting to see the structure and architecture of the hull of an almost 200-year-old ship.”

Q6 – What skills have you developed on the ship?

“I have greatly improved my language skills as I can now understand far more “Scottish” than I ever could before! Also, it has given me the chance to develop my research skills and enhance my English writing ability.”

Q7 – What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved with volunteering at HMS Unicorn?

“I would say they should send a message and join the crew. Everybody is welcome and with ships it is always the more hands the better!”

Q8 – Sum up HMS Unicorn in 3 words

“True living history.”
