2010 Unicorn ‘Mayday’ Golf Day

Following the success of previous years’ events, the Unicorn annual ‘May Day’ golf event, organised by Avian Communications,  is becoming a regular date in the Tayside business calendar.  We are delighted to announce the third Annual HM Frigate Unicorn Golf Tournament will be held next year on Thursday 27th May 2010 and we are now inviting teams and individuals to enter for this event.

The event raised just over £4,000 last year, matching the total raised in 2008 and the Unicorn Preservation Society wishes to thank all those who have taken part or made a donation.

HM Frigate Unicorn is one of the six oldest ships in the world, yet she has been so taken for granted and overlooked in Dundee that in 2006 she was placed at the top of the UK National Historic Ships ‘Ships at Risk’ list.

The main objective of our fund raising is to secure a move for HM Unicorn to Dundee’s new central waterfront development alongside the RRS Discovery.

However the ship is in urgent need of protection against the elements and a canopy is needed to cover the entire ship to ensure that she is ready for the move to her new waterfront berth and also to allow urgent remedial work to take place but which cannot happen until the canopy is in place. So this year’s tournament will play a major part in raising the £30,000 needed to get the canopy in place.

The cost to enter a team in the May Day Golf Tournament is only £440.00. As well as attending this year’s golf day, you also have a further opportunity for your company to be recognised as a ‘Supporter of HM Frigate Unicorn’. By donating £100, your company will be promoted on the day and displayed for posterity on a special panel positioned at the entrance to the ship.

The golf tournament will follow previous years’ “AmAm” format allowing companies to enter teams of four people. The number of teams is limited to 20 so the entrants can thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the day’s entertainment.

The tournament returns to the Monifieth Medal Course, a qualifying venue for The Open at Carnoustie. The post golf meal and prize giving on board The Unicorn will be hosted by The Rt. Hon The Earl of Dalhousie, chairman of the Unicorn Preservation Society, and Mr Ian McLeod, Senior PGA professional Monifieth Golf Links.

The main sponsor of this year’s event is Avian Communications Ltd who as in previous years will manage the event organisation and planning.

Paul Sykes at Avian is now taking bookings for teams (see contact details below), and a full agenda including tee times will be sent within 14 days of the event.

We do hope you can join us on the 27th May and support this very worthy and local charity event.
