Waiting in the Wings: Letters of a Pilot in World War II
Join HMS Unicorn to hear about Dr. Gaye Manwaring’s new book, “Waiting in the Wings: Letters of a Pilot in World War II”.
About this Event
Dr. Gaye Manwaring will be telling her father’s story as a pilot in the Second World War. After learning to fly different planes in Canada, the USA, and South Africa, he was stationed at Montrose to train as a flying instructor. He was stationed on 26 bases and five troop ships and wrote hundreds of letters home to his sweetheart, who became his wife, between 1940 and 1946.
Gaye's new book - "Waiting in the Wings: Letters of a Pilot in World War II" - draws on her father’s letters which tell of all aspects of the war, from his experiences learning to fly to the death of his comrades. All royalties from the sale of the book go to the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre, where there is an exhibit about Gaye’s father.
Dr. Gaye Manwaring MBE recently retired from the University of Dundee where she was a Senior Lecturer. During lockdown she has run online courses on wellbeing and is working on two more books.
