A Temporary Solution…

Unicorn stands on the brink of a dramatic new future as a central part of Dundee’s new waterfront but her current berth does not encourage visitors and we must ensure that the Central Waterfront opportunity does not slip away.

In the meantime, it is now clear that Unicorn needs to be able to survive in her existing situation for at least several more years.

Rainwater is Unicorn’s worst enemy, and the canvas canopy fitted over the forecastle in 2005 has proved remarkably effective.  Plans to apply a similar canopy/roof extension to protect the remainder of the ship have now taken on a new urgency as a result of the HLF decision, competing quotes are being evaluated and fundraisng is in progress.

Once the extra protection is in place, other important conservation, remedial and cosmetic works will be required.  These will include anti-fungal chemicals (water soluble, so not sensible without the roof extension) minimal planking repair and re-painting, but these will not be practicable ahead of the roof extension.
